French Press
Why french press? The resulting cup using a french press is robust and pure, as the grounds are fully immersed throughout the process. With a metal mesh filter, the oils of the beans remain in the brew instead of being trapped in a paper filter like in many other methods. The french press method creates a truly full-bodied cup of coffee sure to wake your senses right up.
- Grind: medium-coarse
- Brew time: 5 minutes
- Water temp: off-boil
- Brew ratio: 1:16
- 25g fresh coffee
- 400g water
While boiling the water, grind your coffee to a medium-coarse size.
Transfer the ground coffee to the chamber of the french press and gently shake to level it out. Set the press on your scale and tare it to zero.
Once the water reaches a boil, remove it from the heat and allow it to cool to 200*. Pour the water into the chamber until your scale reaches 400 grams. Start your timer for five minutes.
After one minute, stir the water gently with a wooden or plastic spoon and place the plunger on top of the chamber (if using a metal spoon, be careful to not hit the walls of the french press too hard, as it is in a fragile state with boiling water). Do not press down on the plunger yet.
After five minutes, slowly depress the plunger. Avoid pushing down too fast and bring on excessive agitation.
Serve immediately or empty the remaining coffee into an empty carafe to avoid the leftover grounds from continuing to extract.
Clear your french press by disassembling the plunger and rinsing all of its parts with hot water. Enjoy the delicious cup!
